The Neven blanket is a classic cabled blanket – with a twist.
The blanket is reversible with cables on both sides, bordered with a traditional moss stitch edging.
Knitted in an Aran weight yarn, the pattern is written for two sizes of blanket, a pram or stroller size and a larger lap blanket size.
Although the blanket looks complicated, it is actually very easy to work. I have provided both written and charted forms of the pattern, so you can work from whichever you prefer, and the cable is a simple 2×2 cable repeated throughout.
You will need:
Aran weight yarn, approx. 750 meters for the small blanket and 1125 meters for the large size. This is approx. 9 balls or 13 balls in an aran yarn with between 85 and 90 meters per 50g.
Pair of 5mm (US8) needles. A long circular needle is recommended to accommodate the number of stitches but you could use a pair of long straight needles if that is better for you and they will hold the stitches comfortably.
Make it your own.
This classic blanket would look great in any colour. The sample here was knitted with a pure wool, slightly mottled yarn but a traditional cream or any colour to match your scheme would be just as effective. If you want the blanket to be easily washable, choose a machine washable wool, wool mix or acrylic blend yarn – all are suitable for knitting this design.
